10 THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT KESHA AT SXSW

March 14, 2017

Animals, rejoice!

Kesha was in town for SXSW and got mad real about things like cyberbullying and what it was like having to learn to accept her body during rehab. She even told the audience how many whale tattoos she has. (Spoiler alert—it's three!)

Amy Emmerich, chief content officer at Refinery29, did the interviewing and the audience did the Snapchatting, the tweeting and the live streaming.

The visit from Kesha was prompted by Refinery29's most recent initiative, Reclaim Your Domain. The campaign, which uses #reclaimyourdomain, is focused on spreading awareness about online harassment and cyberbullying to promote a safer online space... especially for women.

Kesha was spitting truth the entire hour she sat in her pleather SXSW chair, but a few things she said were extra noteworthy.

If she lived to be 100, she would open up a Liger sanctuary.

You know, like, the thing that results from breeding a male tiger with a lioness. This may or may not still be legal in Ohio according to Kesha.

Being a feminist means being whatever the f-ck you want to be.

"I can be a sexy, funny, gross, psycho, intelligent, beautiful animal rights activist that pisses in the street. I can be all those things. I'm a female. I'm a motherf-cking woman who can be every single one of those things. They're not mutually exclusive."

She regrets the "shitty" tiger tattoo on the back of her hand...

...but not as much as her '$' tattoo.

She lost the '$' when she reexamined her rebellious facade.

“It happened after I went to rehab for my eating disorder. I let go of my facade about being a girl who didn't care. My facade was to be strong, and I realized it was total bullshit. I took out the $ because I realized that was part of the facade."

Her secret goal is to live on an island full of cats.

Preferably one day in the not-so-far off future.

Speaking of cats, she actually saw two lions having sex on her 30th birthday.

She is thoroughly convinced it's a good omen. "I was like, 'I think my 30's are going to be dope.'"

Sometimes she records song ideas on her boyfriend's phone.

"I'm always like, 'I've got a song idea!' and he's like, 'Oh God' and gives me his phone for me to record. Two months later I'll be like, 'Remember when I was off-tune mumbling in your phone?' then I play the song for him and he's like, 'Oh shit!'"

She once visited an island where you are allowed to run around naked with spears.

She also recommends being a nudist for a few days. Why? It will make you more comfortable with your body and the bodies of others. You know... #freethenipple!

If she wasn't a global pop sensation, she would be a scuba diver.

She loves snorkeling, but she LOOOVES scuba diving.

Her new album isn't exactly country, but it isn't exactly pop either.

The things she's experienced in the past year have inspired her to write around 70 to 80 songs and she is currently determining which will make the cut for her next album. "The new music is just me speaking honestly about the shit I've been through in my life. I'm really excited and really proud of it because I'm talking honestly about my life for the first time ever without anyone dictating anything. I like it... I don't care what anyone else thinks."

Stay awesome, Kesha!

My whole world
Like if u remember 💀💀💀 | I told myself 2018 would be the year of me doing what I wanted to be doing instead of me doing what I knew would make everyone comfortable and happy. Some loved my decisions, some hated my decisions, some questioned my decisions — I got to hear lots of opinions along the way 😉 But all in all I can say that this year has brought me some of the BEST memories, most WONDERFUL people and most importantly, a sense of S E L F that I’m 100% sure won’t be molded to fit into others’ expectations in 2019. 💁🏼‍♀️

LIFE LESSON LEARNED: That I honestly do not care if people like me, because everyone should stay in their own lane and not be so worried with what I’m doing in the first place. 🌞
